Fitting a light yourself or calling an electrician?

Changing a bulb and creating a new light point are very different jobs. Which tasks you can usually do yourself, where an electrician is essential, and how to decide.

A new light fitting has been bought, the old one has come down and two or three wires are hanging from the ceiling. An online installation video takes ten minutes, while the electrician can only come tomorrow. Many people in this situation decide to do it themselves. Sometimes that is perfectly reasonable. Sometimes a wrong connection leads months later to overheating, fire or an electric shock. To decide, you need to judge the type of job and the conditions in your home correctly.

Jobs you can usually do yourself

Some tasks involve no electrical installation work and can be done carefully by anyone:

  • replacing a bulb with one of the same cap and no more than the permitted wattage;
  • setting up a table lamp, floor lamp or plug-in fitting;
  • installing battery-powered or rechargeable lights and stick-on LED lights;
  • cleaning and changing a shade, lampshade or diffuser.

The basic rule for these is simple: switch the light off, let a hot bulb cool and use a safe step or ladder.

Do not take the ladder lightly either. The most common injury in bulb and light fitting jobs comes not from electric shock but from falls. Use a sturdy stepladder rather than a chair or stool, ask someone to hold it if possible, and stand at a height where both hands are free.

Jobs that need experience

Replacing an existing ceiling light with another one in the same place, connected to the same wires, is regarded in many countries as work a homeowner may do. But for it to be safe, several conditions must be met:

  • you can find and turn off the right breaker in your fuse board;
  • you own a voltage tester or multimeter and use it, rather than trusting the wall switch;
  • you can tell the live, neutral and earth conductors apart;
  • you use terminal blocks properly rather than twisting wires together and taping them;
  • you hang the fitting from a secure fixing suited to its weight.

If even one of these points gives you pause, call a professional.

In Azerbaijan, requirements for electrical installation work are set by the applicable regulatory documents, and in apartment buildings some work may also need agreement from the management organisation. When in doubt, it is worth finding out in advance.

Jobs that definitely need an electrician

In these cases the work should go to a professional:

  • adding a new light point, switch or circuit;
  • installing a light in a bathroom, shower area, sauna or near a pool;
  • connecting a light outdoors, in a garden, on a façade or in the ground;
  • any work in the consumer unit, or fitting a new breaker or residual current device;
  • connecting to circuits with old aluminium wiring, crumbling insulation or blackened joints;
  • building a system of drivers, transformers and many spots in a suspended ceiling;
  • wiring two-way switches, sensors, dimmers and smart control systems;
  • fixing heavy chandeliers, especially to plasterboard or stretch ceilings.

Warning signs that should change your mind

You can stop even after starting. If you see any of the following, do not continue:

  • the wires coming from the ceiling are not standard colours, or are all the same colour;
  • there are more wires than you expected;
  • the tester still shows voltage after you have switched off the breaker;
  • the insulation is brittle, blackened or melted;
  • there is a burning smell, soot marks or melted plastic in the ceiling;
  • the fitting's instructions do not match your situation.

These signs usually point to a bigger problem, and covering them up can lead to more serious consequences later.

The consequences of a poor installation are often not visible straight away. A loosely tightened terminal causes no trouble in the first weeks, but under load it gradually heats up and the contact deteriorates. A missing earth connection only shows itself when the insulation fails and someone touches the metal body. That is why the thought that the light came on, so everything must be fine, is misleading.

What to tell the electrician

When you call an electrician, tell them in advance about the type and weight of the fitting, the ceiling material, what the existing wiring looks like (a photo helps) and any problems you have noticed. That helps them arrive with the right tools and materials. When the job is done, make sure the connections are made with terminal blocks, the earth is connected and the switch breaks the live conductor.

Once the fitting is properly installed, choosing the lamp is the easy part. Choose it by base: Zəfər İşığı makes LED models for E27, E14, GU10 and G5.3.
