Which bulb to put in a desk lamp

A desk lamp is small, but the wrong bulb tires your eyes and heats the shade. How to choose the right cap, output, shape, colour and flicker-free quality.

When a desk lamp's bulb goes, many people screw in the first one they find: a spare left at home or the cheapest option in the shop. In a ceiling fitting that barely matters. A desk lamp is different: it is close to your eyes, its light falls straight onto a book or notebook, and the shade is only a few centimetres from the bulb. Here the bulb's output, shape, colour and quality directly affect everyday comfort.

Step 1: the cap and the fitting's limits

Start with the lampholder. Desk lamps most often use E27 and E14 screw caps, while some compact and designer models use smaller ones such as G9 capsules or GU10. You can identify the cap from the old bulb's base or the marking on the holder.

A maximum wattage is usually printed near the holder or under the lamp base, for example “max. 40 W”. That figure is a heat limit from the incandescent era. A real LED wattage is far lower, so exceeding it is unlikely, but bulb size matters: an LED body is sometimes bulkier than the old bulb and may press against the shade.

Step 2: how much light you need

The most common mistake with desk lamps is choosing a bulb that is too bright. Your eyes face a strong contrast between the white page and the darker surroundings and tire quickly. On the other hand, a weak bulb strains the eyes and makes people lean closer to the page.

The right amount depends on the lamp's purpose:

  • Task lamp for reading and writing: clear, even light on the page; with a directional head, a medium-output LED bulb is usually enough.
  • Decorative or background lamp: creates a soft pool of light in the room; a low-output bulb suits it better.
  • A child's homework lamp: enough light without glare, with the room's general light on too.

Compare the amount of light by the lumen figure on the pack; watts show consumption. For comparison with an old incandescent, boxes often state an equivalent wattage as well.

Step 3: shape and glass

In a lamp with a shade, the bulb's shape determines how light is distributed. A classic A-shape bulb spreads light in all directions, which suits even light under a shade. A small candle bulb fits better in narrow or shallow shades. Small globe bulbs look attractive in open, decorative lamps.

A frosted bulb matters. With clear glass or filament bulbs, bright points are visible, and with a shallow shade they create direct glare while reading. Filament bulbs look good in decorative lamps and clear glass shades, but a frosted bulb is more comfortable for a task lamp.

Step 4: colour temperature

Choose the colour of a desk lamp according to its use. For evening reading and relaxing, warm light (around 2700–3000 K) feels comfortable and calming. For homework, paperwork, drawing or anything involving colour, neutral white (about 4000 K) shows text and colours more clearly. Very cool, bluish light looks harsh to many people when viewed close up for long periods.

Avoiding a sharp difference between the desk lamp's colour and the room's general light also helps prevent eye strain.

Step 5: flicker and dimmers

Because you look at a desk lamp from close range for long stretches, stable light matters more here. Point your phone camera at the lit bulb: if bands run across the screen, the light flickers. That may not matter for brief use, but it can be uncomfortable during long reading.

If the desk lamp has a dimmer, the bulb must be dimmable, which is stated separately on the packaging. A non-dimmable LED bulb on a dimmer may flicker, buzz or fail early. Lamps with touch or sensor controls need the same check.

Quick selection list

  • The cap is correctly identified.
  • The bulb fits inside the shade without touching it.
  • The amount of light matches the lamp's purpose.
  • A frosted bulb is chosen for a task lamp.
  • The colour temperature suits the task and the room light.
  • If there is a dimmer, the bulb is dimmable.
  • The camera test shows no flicker.

With the holder and shade in mind, desk lamp options in the Zəfər İşığı range include E27 LED bulbs, E14 candles, small globes and decorative filament lamps.
