Choosing candle bulbs for a chandelier: shape, cap and light

In a chandelier the bulbs are both the light source and part of the décor. How to match candle bulb shape, cap, colour temperature and output.

A chandelier is often the centrepiece of a room, and how it looks depends not only on the metal and crystal but on the bulbs on its arms. A chandelier with a few dead bulbs, others glowing in different shades, or shapes that do not match, catches the eye for the wrong reasons. Choosing candle bulbs therefore deserves a bit more thought than buying an ordinary bulb.

Confirm the cap and the count first

Chandeliers most often use E14, though large classic models may take E27. Removing one bulb is enough to check, but make sure the fitting does not mix caps: in some designs the central bulb is E27 while the arms are E14.

Count the bulbs as well. Replacing them all at once is the best way to get a uniform look and a uniform light colour. When you replace them one by one, bulbs from different batches or brands may give slightly different light.

Shape: classic candle or flame tip

• C35 / C37 classic candle: smooth and symmetrical with a pointed tip. It suits almost any classic or modern chandelier.
• Flame or tip candle: the tip bends to one side. It looks especially natural on classic chandeliers with imitation candle sleeves.
• Filament candle: thin LED filaments inside clear glass. It adds sparkle to chandeliers with crystal drops or glass elements.
• Small globe (G45/P45): can replace candles in modern chandeliers with clean lines.

Height matters too. If the arms have decorative candle sleeves or cups, the bulb should neither tower above them nor disappear inside. Measure the old bulb and compare it with the new one.

Glass: frosted, clear or filament

Frosted glass softens the light and hides the bright point. If the chandelier hangs low or you look straight at the bulbs, frosted glass is easier on the eyes.

Clear glass lets light break through crystal drops and dance around the room. But a bare bright point shining straight into your eyes can cause glare.

Filament bulbs keep the look of clear glass, but because the light is spread along thin filaments they appear softer than an ordinary clear LED bulb.

Light colour

Living rooms and bedrooms with chandeliers usually get warm white light, roughly 2700–3000 K. It warms up the gold tones of metal and the sparkle of crystal and creates an evening atmosphere. Neutral white, around 4000 K, suits kitchens or study-type spaces better. Cool white in a classic chandelier often feels harsh and office-like.

Above all, every bulb in the chandelier should have the same colour temperature. Even one odd bulb stands out from across the room.

Work out the total brightness

A chandelier's light is the sum of many bulbs. Say each bulb on a six-arm chandelier gives about as much light as a 40-watt incandescent: together that equals 240 watts of incandescent light, which may be a lot for a medium-sized room.

When choosing output, look at lumens rather than watts. Under the EU equivalence table, a 40 W incandescent corresponds to about 470 lm and a 25 W to about 250 lm. In a small room, lower-lumen bulbs on a multi-arm chandelier help prevent glare.

If there is a dimmer

If the chandelier is on a dimmer, choose only bulbs marked "dimmable". Non-dimmable LED candles on a dimmer circuit may flicker, buzz or glow faintly without switching fully off. Check the dimmer too: older dimmers designed for incandescent loads may not control a small LED load properly.

A final check before you buy:

• Cap: E14 or E27, and are they all the same?
• Do the shape and length suit the decorative sleeves?
• Glass: frosted, clear or filament?
• Are all bulbs the same colour temperature?
• Does the total light suit the size of the room?
• If there is a dimmer, are the bulbs dimmable?
