Decorating with filament bulbs: loft and retro styles

The thin strips of light visible through clear glass turn a filament bulb into decoration in its own right. How to choose and place them in loft and retro interiors.

Clear bulbs hanging from simple cables with glowing orange strips inside are a familiar sight in cafés, restaurants and loft-style flats. These are filament LED bulbs. They look like old Edison lamps, but instead of a tungsten wire they contain thin strips with LED chips mounted along them. What sets a filament bulb apart from an ordinary one is that it is made to be seen, not hidden behind a shade. So using it in an interior calls for a different approach.

Why filament bulbs look different

In an ordinary LED bulb, the diodes sit on a board and a frosted dome spreads the light evenly. In a filament bulb, LED chips are mounted on long, thin transparent strips and coated with phosphor. These strips can be arranged inside the glass in different shapes: straight columns, spirals, loops, hearts, flames. Behind clear glass they resemble the filament of an incandescent lamp.

The result is that the bulb emits light as bright lines rather than a diffuse glow and becomes a decorative element itself. Brown, amber or smoked-glass versions warm the light further and give it an antique look. Most bulbs of this type have a warm, sometimes very warm, candle-like colour temperature.

Loft and industrial style

The core elements of a loft interior are exposed brick, concrete, metal, rough timber and visible services. Filament bulbs sit naturally with these materials.

• A bare bulb on a cable. A black or fabric-covered cable, a simple metal lampholder and a large globe or elongated bulb: the classic loft solution.
• Clusters of pendants. Three to five bulbs hung at different heights over a bar counter or long table create a composition.
• Metal frames and cages. A cage-style metal guard protects the bulb and strengthens the industrial look.
• Wall lights and track systems. Fittings made from pipes or metal profiles continue the exposed-services aesthetic.

Retro and classic interiors

Filament bulbs are not only for hard-edged lofts. In classic chandeliers, clear candle-shaped filament bulbs go well with crystal and bronze details and bring back the look of old incandescent lamps. In a retro table lamp, a vintage wall light or a pendant with a glass shade, a globe filament bulb creates a warm, nostalgic atmosphere.

The style works in small flats too: two pendants over a kitchen island, a vintage wall light by the bed or a single decorative floor lamp in the living room is enough. Filling the whole home with filament bulbs, on the other hand, can quickly become tiring and dim.

Practical points: glare and quantity of light

The beauty of a filament bulb is also its weakness: the bright strips behind clear glass are harsh to look at directly. So:

• place bulbs above or below eye level, not in a seated person's direct line of sight;
• hang pendants over a table at a height where diners do not look straight into the strips;
• a dimmable system with dimmable filament bulbs lets you soften the light in the evening;
• smoked or amber glass reduces glare.

Filament bulbs are mainly decorative, atmospheric light. It is unrealistic to expect enough even light from them for reading, chopping in the kitchen or homework. Even in a loft interior, functional light such as ceiling spotlights, worktop lighting and reading lamps should be planned separately. The filament bulb then adds character on top.

Selection checklist

• The cap suits the fitting: usually E27 for large pendants, E14 for chandeliers and wall lights.
• The shape and size of the bulb look proportionate in an open lampholder.
• The colour temperature does not clash with the room's other lights.
• A dimmer on the circuit means the lamp must be marked as dimmable.
• The bulb does not cause glare at eye level.
• Functional light is provided separately.
